Ukrainian Team, 'miracle' ang pagdating sa Beijing Olympics

Matapang na hinarap ang umuulan na bomba at bala, ligtas ang Ukrainian athletes na nakarating sa Beijing bago pa man pasimulan ang Winter Paralympics na nagsimula na kahapon, na para kay Ukrainian paralympic committee president Valeriy Sushkevych na isang milagro ang kanilang biyaheng ligtas.


Nasa ilalim pa rin ng kaguluhan ang Ukraine makaraang kubkubin sila ng Russia, kung kaya napilitan ang International Paralympic Committee (IPC) noong Huwebes na i-ban na ang Russian at Belarusian athletes sa Games matapos na unang payagan sila isang neutral competition. Ang Belarus ang bansang kumampi sa Russia. "Not coming here would have been taking the easy option... Our presence at the Paralympics is not merely a presence, this is a sign that Ukraine is and will remain a country," saad ni Sushkevych sa reporters noong Huwebes.


Pahirapan nga lang bago sila nakarating sa Beijing, ayon kay Sushkevych, miyembro ng Ukraine's parliament dahil kailangan nilang matulog sa sahig ng bus ng dalawang araw habang ang iba pang miyembro ng delegasyon ay nakaiwas sa missiles habang papalabas ng bansa. "More than four days and four nights we took to come here. It's a miracle that we're here... A part of our team was already abroad. A part of our team was in Ukraine. All the necessary equipment was in Ukraine... We had to unite all those parts. It is 25 years I am president of the national paralympic committee of the Ukraine. And never was it so difficult, so heavy to come to the Paralympic Games."


Aktibo ang Ukraine sa paglahok sa Winter Games sa nakaraang mga taon, nakasungkit ng 22 medals kabilang na ang 7 gold sa Pyeongchang, sa nakalipas na 4 na taon.


Samantala, banned din ang Russian at Belarusian athletes noong Huwebes sa Beijing Winter Paralympics dahil sa pag-atake sa Ukraine at ipinataw ang ban dahil na rin sa international pressure at bantang boykot.
