Inihirit ng isang U.N. climate chief noong Miyerkules na dapat nang kumilos sa loob ng dalawang taon ang mga opisyal ng gobyerno, malalaking negosyante, at mga bangko upang pigilan ang lumulubhang climate change.

Ayon sa mga siyentipiko, mahalaga na bawasan sa kalahati ang mapanganib na greenhouse gas emissions sa 2030 upang pigilan ang pagtaas ng temperatura ng higit sa 1.5 Celsius na magdudulot ng mas labis at malubhang init.

Sinabi ni Simon Stiell, ang Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, na mahalaga ang susunod na dalawang taon sa pagliligtas ng ating planeta.

"We still have a chance to make greenhouse gas emissions tumble, with a new generation of national climate plans. But we need these stronger plans, now," aniya.

Ipinanawagan niya na magdagdag ng mas maraming pondo para sa klima sa pamamagitan "cheaper financing for poorer countries, new sources of international finance such as a tax on shipping emissions, and reforms at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund."

"Every day finance ministers, CEOs, investors, and climate bankers and development bankers, direct trillions of dollars. It's time to shift those dollars," dagdag ni Stiell.
