Paglahok ni Pacman sa Olympics inapela ng POC

Umapela ang Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) sa International Olympic Committee (IOC) para payagan si Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao na makalahok sa darating na 2024 Paris Olympics.

Ayon kay POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, nagpadala na sila ng liham para iapela sa IOC upang mabigyan si Pacquiao ng slot sa Paris Games sa pamamagitan ng universality principle.

Ang nasabing universality principle ay ipinagkakaloob sa mga atletang mula sa mga bansang nagkakaproblema na umabot sa Olympics sa pamamagitan ng mga normal qualifying tournaments.

Ngunit dahil sa kasalukuyang estado ni Pacquiao, umaasa ang POC at maging ang Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) na mabibigyan ng exception ang dating senador.

“Who doesn’t want Manny Pacquiao in their Olympic lineup? Obviously, he’s an absolute legend, but there are rules in place that we have to consider also,” wika ni ABAP secretary-general Marcus Manalo.

Hindi na rin naman puwedeng sumali si Pacquiao sa mga Olympic qualifying tournaments dahil lagpas na ito sa itinakdang age limit na 40-anyos dahil 44 na taong gulang na ito. “We can probably challenge that age limit since we can assume that its purpose is to protect the [older] boxers because you’re unsure about their conditioning, their level of training,” dagdag ni Manalo.

Kung sakali, naniniwala ang ABAP na isang malaking morale booster para sa Team Philippines kung mapapasama sa koponan si Pacquiao. “Obviously, that would be extremely beneficial for us. The presence alone of Manny Pacquiao would be a big boost already for the team,” ayon pa kay Manalo. “We hope the IOC considers. But the question is are they going to make exceptions for the policies in place?”
