Daan-daang mga volunteers ang lumahok sa isang mass cleanup drive sa kahabaan ng baybayin ng Manila Bay kaugnay ito sa International Coastal Cleanup Day nitong Sabado.


Ang mga volunteers at mga kawani ng gobyerno, kabilang ang napakaraming Coast Guard personnel, ay nakakolekta ng mga sachets, mga gomang tsinelas at iba pang non-biodegradable waste na napadpad at nagkalat sa Manila Bay, ang 60-km (37-mile) semi-enclosed estuary na nakaharap sa South China Sea.


“This initiative will help make our coastal area in Manila Bay better so that our tourists and visitors will see the beauty of the bay,” pahayag ng 18-anyos na college student na si Kendrick Lopez sa Reuters sa ginanap na cleanup drive.


Gayundfin, kitang-kita na ang tubig sa kahabaan ng Manila Bay, na tanyag sa kanyang idyllic sunsets, ay lubhang napakarumi sanhi ng langis, grease at basura na mula sa kalapit na residential areas at mga ports.


“We need to do these (cleanup drives) for our environment and to discourage people from throwing trash on the seaside,” saad ng 36-anyos na volunteer na si Janet Panganiban sa Reuters.


Ang International Coastal Cleanup Day ay ginaganap tuwing ikatlong Sabado ng Setyembre, ito ay upang mas magdulot pa ng kamalayan o awareness sa marami hinggil sa lumalalang problema sa basura na nakakaapekto sa mga baybayin sa buong mundo.
