Leyte Rep. Romualdez, bilang Speaker ng House of Representatives

Si Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez ang na-elect na Speaker ng House of Representatives na walang sinuman na nag-oppose ngayong Lunes, ang unang araw ng 19th Congress.

Mula sa 309 House members, 282 ang bumoto para kay Romualdez, pinsan ni Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., habang apat ang nag-abstained at 22 naman ang hindi bumoto.

Si Romualdez, na nagsilbi bilang House majority leader sa 18th Congress, ay ni-nominate ng kanyang pamangkin na si Ilocos Norte Representative Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos, ang anak ng Pangulo.

“Representative Romualdez’s competence is far beyond dispute. Much has been said of his familial relations to the President, but the reasons I cited ascertain that his qualification is beyond sufficient to lead us to greater heights,” pahayag ni Rep. Marcos.

Sang-ayon din si Batangas Representative Ralph Recto at ni-nominate si Romualdez, dahil aniya mayaman ito sa karanasan sa loob at labas ng gobyerno.

“If experience will be the sole basis of our choice, then my nominee has served five terms in this House, and has worked on both sides of the aisle, as majority leader and as independent fiscalizer,” saad ni Recto.

“This means he can shepherd the bills that can help our country as skillfully as he can stop the ones that harm our people," dagdag pa ng dating senador.

Sa ilalim ng House rules na itinataguyod ng Supreme Court, ang mga hindi bumoto para sa nanalong speaker ay bubuo ng Minority bloc. Ang mga miyembro ng Minority bloc ang sila namang mag-e-elect ng kanilang magiging lider.
