DFA: ‘Pinas at US, pina-finalize na ang Marcos-Biden meet sa NY

Personal na makikipagkita si Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. kay US President Joe Biden sa susunod na buwan sa bahagi ng United Nations General Assembly sa New York, ayon sa Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) ngayong Sabado.

“We agreed to work together over the next couple of months in firming up opportunities for our presidents for a possible meeting on the sidelines of UN General Assembly in New York next month, as well as a possible visit by President Marcos to Washington, DC,” pahayag ni DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo sa isang joint press conference kasama si US State Secretary Antony Blinken na dumating sa bansa kagabi.

“The issue is when that visit will take place, which would depend on the schedule of both presidents. Talks would be on trying to find what date might be suitable for both,” sabi pa ni Manalo.

“[The] UN General Assembly meeting will be the first time that the President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will be in front of an important number of head of states,” saad ni UN Resident Coordinator in the Philippines Gustavo Gonzalez sa mga reporters noong Hunyo.

Ayon sa UN website, ang UNGA ay ang main policy-making organ ng organisasyon. Kabilang sa mga desisyon na ginagawa nito ay pag-appoint ng secretary-general, pag-elect ng mga non-permanent members ng Security Council, at pag-approve ng UN budget.

Gayundin, nagpupulong ang Assembly ng regular sessions mula Setyembre hanggang Disyembre bawat taon.

Una nang binanggit ni US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman na si Pangulong Marcos maaari nang mag-travel sa United States nang hindi huhulihin para sa $353-million contempt order laban sa kanyang pamilya na may kaugnayan sa human rights case.

"The fact is when you are head of state, you have immunity in all circumstances and are welcomed to the United States in your official role," saad ni Sherman sa mga reporters matapos ang meeting niya kay Pangulong Marcos noong Hunyo 9.

Gayunman, ang head of state’s diplomatic immunity ay sakop lamang si Pangulong Marcos, hindi ang kanyang pamilya.
