Ateneo Blue Eagles Team atras sa Preseason Cup

Pormal ng umatras ang Ateneo Blue Eagles men’s basketball team sa isinasagawang FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup kasunod pa rin ng trahedyang bumalot sa kanilang koponan sa pagpanaw nina Rene Clert Baterbonia at Divine Adili, habang asam ng University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) ang pangako ng katotohanan, hustisya at pananagutan sa naganap na Dipaculao, Aurora tragedy.

Sa inilabas na statement ng liga, inanunsiyo nito ang tuluyang pagkaalis ng Ateneo sa kabuuan ng kanilang mga laro dulot pa rin ng pagdadalamhati at pagluluksa sa pagkawala ng 2 student-athletes kasunod ng malagim na aksidente nitong Hunyo 8, kung saan inamin ni coach Tab Baldwin ang pagkabigong matugunang masaklolohan ang mga manlalaro.  

“The Executive Committee of the 19th Filoil Ecooil Preseason Cup has been informed of Ateneo de Manila University's decision to withdraw from competing for the remainder of the tournament,” ayon sa statement “Upon continuous discussions and as confirmed with the University's athletic director Mr. Emmanuel Fernandez, it was deemed appropriate to grant their request out of compassion following the tragic incident.” “The league continues to extend its heartfelt condolences to the families of the bereaved and to the community as we navigate these tough times.”

Nagawa pang lumahok ng Ateneo sa isang laro laban sa Adamson na nagtapos sa 72-52 na pinagbidahan ni Travis Roberts sa 17 puntos at sinegundahan nina Kiefer Alas at Joaqui Espina sa tig-9 na puntos, habang tinanggal na rin sa panibagong inilabas na schedule ang nakatakdang laban kontra UST at FEU sa Martes at Miyerkules.

Hinihimok din ng UAAP ang National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), na magsagawa ng mabilis at masusing pagsisiyasat upang malaman na ang katotohanan.
