Tatlong bagong appointees ang hinirang ni Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. upang muling mabuo o reconstituted ang governing body ng Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).


Ginawa ang appointments sa gitna ng controversial order na nag-aawtorisa para sa importasyon ng 300,000 metriko tonelada ng asukal, kung saan idineklarang “illegal” at ibinasura rin ng Punong Ehekutibo.


Batay sa report ng state-run PTV, itinalaga ni Pangulong Marcos sina David John Thaddeus P. Alba bilang acting administrator ng SRA.


Pinalitan ni Alba si dating SRA Administrator Hermenegildo Serafica, na nag-resign sa kanyang posisyon sa gitna ng kontrobersya kaugnay sa Sugar Order No. 4 (SO 4). Ang naturang order ay itinuturing na illegal, habang nag-convened ang Sugar Regulatory Board at nag-isyu ng isang resolution na walang approval ni Pangulong Marcos, na bilang concurrent secretary ng Department of Agriculture (DA) ay siyang chairman ng sugar board.


Ang iba pang newly-appointed Sugar Regulatory Board members ay sina Pablo Luis S. Azcona na pumalit kay sugar planters representative Aurelio Gerardo Valderrama Jr.; at Ma. Mitzi V. Mangwag na pinalitan naman si sugar millers representative Atty. Roland Beltran, na nag-resign na dahilan sa kalusugan.


Ang SRA ay isang government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCC) na attached sa DA, at itinatag noong 1986 alinsunod sa Executive Order No. 18.


Nakasaad dito, “It is mandated to promote the growth and development of the sugar industry through greater and significant participation of the private sector and to improve the working conditions of laborers.”


Gayundin, ang ahensiya ay nakatuon sa kanilang pagsisikap na epektibong magpalabas ng regulatory, research and development (R&D) at socio-economic activities gaya ng mga livelihood programs para sa mga sugar workers.


Ang Sugar Regulatory Board ay ang governing body ng SRA.
