3,890 cholera cases, nai-record sa ‘Pinas – DOH

Nakapagtala na ng 3,890 cholera cases ngayong taon, kung saan 286 porsiyentong mas mataas mula sa bilang ng mga kaso na nai-report noong 2021, ayon sa Department of Health (DOH) ngayong Biyernes.


Sinabi ng DOH na umabot sa 1,009 kaso ng cholera mula Enero hanggang Oktubre 1 noong nakaraang taon.


“Ang cholera cases natin nitong 2022... are actually higher than what we reported even during the pre-pandemic years,” pahayag ni Dr. Alethea De Guzman, director ng epidemiology bureau ng DOH, sa press briefing.


Karamihan sa mga kaso ng cholera ay nai-tally sa Eastern Visayas na 2,622, Davao Region na may 441 at Caraga na 289.


Gayundin, sa datos ng DOH, makikita na 52% o 2,031 na tinamaan ng cholera ngayong taon ay mga babae at 18% o 692 naman ay mga edad 5 hanggang 9.


Kinumpirma rin ng ahensiya na 37 ang namatay dahil sa cholera hanggang nitong Oktubre 1. Ang naturang bilang ay 640 porsiyentong mas mataas kaysa sa 5 cholera-related deaths naman na nai-record sa parehong panahon noong 2021.


“Pero makikita din natin... na makaraan ng peak nu’ng July ay bumaba na ang kaso ng cholera at mukhang nagpa-plateau na over the last month,” saad ni De Guzman.


Naitala naman ng DOH ang Central Luzon, Central Visayas, at Eastern Visayas na lumagpas sa epidemic threshold sa nakalipas na apat na buwan.


Ang mga lugar na nakapag-record din ng positive growth rate ng mga kaso ng cholera sa nakalipas na buwan ay Central Luzon: Olongapo City; Bicol Region: Camarines Sur; Western Visayas 6: Catanduanes, Masbate; Eastern Visayas: Eastern Samar, Leyte at Ormoc City.


Ayon sa World Health Organization, “Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera.”


“Cholera affects both children and adults, and can kill within hours if untreated,” pahayag pa ng WHO.
