OBIENA, TOPS ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

NAPILI bilang TOPS ‘Athlete of the Month’ si pole vault champion Ernest ‘John’ Obiena nang iangat niya ang bandila ng Pilipinas sa isang kahanga-hangang tagumpay sa pandaigdigang palaro sa ikalawang pagkakataon sa loob ng 4 na buwan. Makaraang maghari sa pole vault competition sa Asian Athletics Championships sa Doha, Qatar noong Abril, umukit ng pangalan sa kasaysayan si Obiena matapos kumabig ng gintong medalya sa 30th Summer Universiade sa Napoli, Italy noong Hulyo 12. Ito ang ikalawang gintong inihatid para sa Pilipinas mula sa Universiade, ang ‘Olympics’ of student-athletes at ikalawa mula nang iuwi rin ni GM Wesley So ang chess gold noong 2013 Kazan Universiade.

Samantala, nananatiling matatag ang kumpiyansa ni Obiena na makukuha nito ang inaasam na slot para sa 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Patuloy na nasa top-20 ng International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Rankings ang dating UST engineering student. Nakatabla ang 23-anyos na atletang Pinoy sa 16th place kasama si KC Lightfoot ng U.S. na parehong may nakuhang markang 5.76 meters at 1201 na result score.

“I am really aiming to get the 5.80 mark. I know I am capable and I am lucky to be invited to these prestigious meetings. I just look at it as opportunities that I can use to improve and be better and represent our flag to the international stage,” pahayag ni Obiena sa panayam sa social media.
