MULI na namang nagkaroon ng tsansa si Filipino Joey Canoy upang maging world titleholder sa pagharap kay defending International Boxing Organization (IBO) minimumweight champion Simphiwe Khonco ng South Africa, ngayong Linggo sa Orient Theater sa East London, South Africa.
Tinitiyak ni Canoy, 25, na makukuha niya ang korona matapos na makuha ang unang IBO world title fight kontra South African Hekkie Budler sa bisa ng 7th round technical knockout win noong Pebrero 4, 2017 doon din sa South Africa.
“I’m confident to beat him (Khonco) and this world title fight is dedicated to my children. I pray to God to bring the title home,” ayon kay General Santos native Canoy, at idinagdag niya na siyento porsiyento siyang handa sa bakbakan. “I’m hoping to get a chance to knock him out.”
Pero matapos matalo kay Budler, umiskor si Canoy ng back-to-back wins at gapiin si dating Filipino world title challenger Melvin Jerusalem (unanimous decision) at Rodel Tejares (technical knockout) sa huling dalawang laban para sa isa pa muling world title shot. Gagabayan si Canoy (14-3-1 win-loss-draw, 7 knockouts) ni trainer Marvelo Aballe, 23, bilang unang head trainer. Si Khonco ay may hawak na 19-5 record at 7 knockouts.
Ang panalo ni Canoy ang maglalagay sa kanya sa listahan ng current elite Filipino world champions na nasa top spot sina WBA welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, WBA bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr., WBO minimumweight champion Vic Saludar at IBF super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas.
