“Salamat sa sakripisyo at sipag ng Pinoy athletes”- PSC

Tila malalampasan pa ang kasunod na milagro ng SEAG 2005 sa patuloy na pag-ungos ng bansa at paghakot ng gold medals sa idinaraos na 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Habang patuloy pa rin ang aksiyon sa iba’t ibang lugar sa Luzon, sinabi ni Philippine Sports Commission chair at chef de mission William ‘’Butch’’ Ramirez na ang biennial Games ay nagpapakita rin ng pagkakaisa para sa bansa, inaalipuntahan man ng mga negatibong bagay at iba pang problema.

Bilang chef de mission din noong 2005, sinabi ni Ramirez, na malakas na ngayon ang ‘sense of patriotism’ ng mga Pinoy lalo na nitong SEA Games. Mayayaman at mahihirap man ay iisa ang puso sa pag-cheers sa mga atleta, manalo o matalo man. Dinig ang cheers ng Pilipinas sa buong arkipelago, lalo na’t humahakot na ang Pinoy ng tumataginting na mga ginto.

“Almost to the final stretch, and I am grateful to God for the steady performance of our team. More than the medal haul, I am thankful for all the sacrifice and hard work that went behind pushing their chances for a shining moment of victory. However, I mean to train the light on the stories beyond these victories. The stories that teach us all lessons, as a sporting community, as a people and as a nation,’’ ayon sa mensahe ni Ramirez.

Habang isinusulat ito, runaway leader na ang Pilipinas sa overall medal tally na may kabuuan nang 221 medals, 89 gold medals. Bumubuntot ang Indonesia na may 50 golds at ang Vietnam ay may 45 golds.

Sa ilalim ni Ramirez, nagpapatuloy ang PSC na magpokus sa grassroots at seryosong pagsuporta sa mga atleta, kaya naman ngayon ay kanilang ipinagmamalaki ang resulta ng pinagpagurang talent at dedikasyon dahil sa matingkad na resulta.

‘‘Having the privilege of being both the PSC Chairman and the Chef de Mission, I am witness to the many beautiful stories behind this event, and given a glimpse into the legacies that the SEAG will leave. The gains from this event does not end when the curtains comes down on the 30th SEAG edition. On top of the victories, there are many long-term advantages — legacies — the SEAG gifted us with,’’ saad ni Ramirez. Idinagdag niya na matapos ang SEAG, ang bansa ay marami na uling mga bagong mga atleta at umaasam na maging tulad nina Watanabe, Didal, Obiena, Yulo, Diaz, at iba pang world-class Pinoy athletes.

Pinuri rin niya ang mga volunteers sa kanilang mga sakripisyo. “ Sports instills values like discipline, dedication and respect for others –values needed for a healthier society — a mandate of the PSC.

It awakened the bayanihan spirit and volunteerism among us. The very spirit shown by the heroism of Roger Casugay who gave up his chance for a golden finish to save an opponent at risk of losing his life to the very waves they play in. Truly a class act. a solid show of Filipino spirit.’’

Nalugod din si Ramirez, sa ipinakitang tunay na pakikiisa ng Pinoy sports fans dahil nagtsi-cheers din ang mga ito sa Timor Leste upang makapag-uwi kahit isang gold medal.
