Itesi, nanguna sa panalo ng NU sa women’s basketball

Nag-init si Congolese center Rhena Itesi at pinangunahan ang National University sa 78-51 panalo kontra Ateneo de Manila kahapon sa UAAP Season 82 Women’s Basketball Tournament sa Ynares Center sa Antipolo.

Nagposte si Itesi ng 25 puntos, 21 rebounds, 5 blocks at 2 assists para pamunuan ang Lady Bulldogs sa kanilang 6th straight win ngayong season na nagpalawig sa kanilang rekord na winning streak hanggang 86 games. “She’s definitely big for us,” wika ni NU coach Patrick Aquino patungkol kay Itesi.

“We’ve been training with Jack and Kelli out, and Rhena’s gonna be the only big girl there. So we try to push her a little bit more.”

Nag-ambag si Fil-Am forward Kelli Hayes ng 11 puntos, 4 rebounds at 2 assists, kasunod si Jack Animam na may tig-7 puntos at boards at 4 na assists bago umalis kasama ng Gilas Pilipinas Women squad patungong Bangalore, India para sa 2019 Fiba Women’s Asia Cup.

Mula sa 33-29 na kalamangan sa halftime nagsalansan ang Lady Bulldogs ng 26 puntos sa 3rd quarter upang itaas ang lamang sa 20-puntos, 59-39. “Medyo slow start, unlike the past two games. Maybe it was because of the long road traveling here, and we had to really adjust because Ateneo started well,” ani Aquino. “It’s a good thing some of the bigs stepped up, including Rhena, Kelli, and Jack. The thing is, we did what we want to do.” Namuno si Kat Guytingco para sa natalong Ateneo sa iniskor na 17 puntos at 6 rebounds. Sanhi ng pagkatalo, nalaglag ang Lady Eagles sa 2-3 kartada.

Sa huling laro, tinapos ng University of Santo Tomas ang kanilang 2-game skid matapos ungusan ang Far Eastern University, 56-55. Pinangunahan ni Grace Irebu ang Golden Tigresses sa nasabing panalo sa itinala nyang 21 puntos, 8 rebounds, tig-3 assists at steals at 2 blocks. (VA)
