Ivermectin kontra-ASF, tetestingin

Bumuo ang Department of Agriculture (DA) ng isang research team upang alamin ang potensiyal na maaaring ibigay ng antiparasitic drug na Ivermectin para maiwasan at makontrol ang pagkalat ng African swine fever (ASF).

Sa isang Special Order No. 310, series of 2021, na may petsang April 30, 2021, iniutos ni DA Secretary William Dar na magtatag ng isang research team kung saan tututok sa ASF control and prevention upang maresolbahan ang krisis sa nasabing sakit.

“The research team is tasked to prepare research proposals on the use of Ivermectin, ASF Buster, Cloud Feed and other potential products for the control and prevention of ASF,” ayon sa inilabas na special order ng DA.

“The team is also directed to conduct preliminary field trials of Ivermectin and other agents to produce science-based evidence in support to control and prevention programs of ASF,” dagdag pa ng DA.

Binubuo ang team ng mga technical advisers, kabilang na sina DA Undersecretary William Medrano, National Livestock Program Director Dr. Ruth Miclat-Sonaco, at Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) officer-in-charge Director Dr. Reildrin Morales.

Inilagay din bilang program leader si BAI OIC-Assistant Director Dr. Rene Santiago habang si Philippine Carabao Center OIC-Deputy Executive Director for Production and Research Dr. Claro Mingala ay assistant program leader.

Ang mga project leaders naman ng research team ay sina National Dairy Authority Deputy Administrator Dr. Farrel Benjelix Magtoto, Pampanga State Agricultural University Associate Professor Dr. Rogelio Carandang, Jr., at BAI Livestock Research and Development Division chief Dr. Marivic de Vera.

Nakasaad pa sa special order na inaatasan ang research team, “to formulate and draft science-based policies for National Guidelines in using Ivermectin and other agents in the control and prevention programs of ASF and collaborate with international research and institution to conduct experiments to support claims in the use of Ivermectin and other agents.”

Matatandaang nagbigay ng matinding atensiyon sa publiko ang Ivermectin dahil sa sinasabing magagamit itong gamot kontra-COVID-19.

Gayunman, hindi pa aprubado ng Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ang pag-inom ng tinatawag na human-grade Ivermectin sa Pilipinas. Ayon sa batas, ang Ivermectin ay maaari lamang i-prescribe sa mga hayop.

Subali't, ang FDA ay nagbigay na ng compassionate use permit para sa paggamit ng Ivermectin sa mga tao laban sa COVID-19 sa limang ospital.

Ayon naman sa FDA, ang pag-isyu nila ng compassionate use permit ay hindi nangangahulugan na ginagarantiya ng ahensiya ang safety at efficacy nito, bagkus, pinayagan lamang nila ito para sa legal administration ng gamot sa bansa.

Samantala, ang resulta ng clinical trials ng Ivermectin bilang treatment sa COVID-19 ng Department of Science and Technology (DOST) ay posibleng lumabas sa Enero 2022.

Pagbabakuna sa baboy kontra-ASF, start na

Sinimulan na ng Bureau of Animal Industry ang trial para sa isang bakuna kontra-African swine fever na gawa ng isang US company. Ayon kay BAI Director Reildrin Morales, napili ang 10 farm na mula sa Luzon base sa pagnanais nilang sumali sa trial at kanilang biosecurity.

“These are vaccines that are not yet registered so kailangang controlled ‘yung lugar where we are conducting the trial,” sabi ni Morales. “Meaning to say, if and when there’s a necessity to stop the trial and do some necessary interventions, we can do that immediately in a biosecured facility,” ani Morales.

Sa ginawang trial, pinagsama-sama ang mga baboy na tinurukan na ng vaccine at mga wala pang bakuna sa isang farm, saka oobserbahan ang mga ito sakaling napasok ng ASF ang nasabing farm. Dito malalaman kung magiging epektibo ang pagbabakuna kontra-ASF.

“We will observe kung halimbawa, let us say we will relax the biosecurity, kung magkakaroon ng challenge doon sa farm, ibig sabihin, napasok ba ‘yung farm, tinamaan ba ‘yung control, ‘yung vaccinated ay ‘di tinamaan? So, there are a lot of parameters,” paliwanag pa ni Morales.

Gayunman, ayon kay Department of Agriculture Secretary William Dar, bumababa na ang kaso ng ASF sa mga baboy sa bansa.

State of emergency dahil sa ASF, inihirit ng DA

Isinumite na ng Department of Agriculture (DA) kay Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang rekomendasyong ideklara ang national state of emergency dahil sa African swine fever (ASF) na naging dahilan ng pagkaunti ng mga baboy at pagtaas ng presyo nito.

Ayon kay DA Secretary William Dar, "(The) ASF is a severe and fatal disease of domestic and wild pigs that is currently decimating the local hog industry of the country.

The disease has already spread to 12 regions, 40 provinces, 466 cities and municipalities, and 2,425 barangays to date.”

Saad pa ng DA sa memorandum, “Over three million heads of pig have been lost due to the disease, causing a contraction in pork supply and an unprecedented increase in the price of basic agricultural commodities.”

Samantala, noong Miyerkules, nag-launch ang DA ng P15-billion lending program para sa mga commercial hog raisers na apektado ng ASF.
