DOST to hold 3rd International Smart City Expo in Isabela

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in partnership with the local government unit of Cauayan City Isabela (ISU) is set to hold the 3rd International Smart City Exposition and Networking Engagement (iSCENE) on May 22-24, 2025, at the Isabela Convention Center, Cauayan City.

Cauayan City, Isabela is the first smart city in the Philippines, designated by the DOST in 2025. The city has implemented various digital solutions to improve network and services such as the installment of free WiFi in its 65 barangays.

With the theme, “Empowering Smart and Sustainable Communities through Government-Academe-Industry Collaboration,” the three-day event will showcase a wide range of activities including talks on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in disaster management, smart cities and communities, and in mobility and smart transportation.

Also, some of the highlights of the event will be the Philippine Smart and Sustainable Cities Awards, the Mobile Command and Control Vehicle (MOCCOV) Operations Olympics, E-Sports tournament, and the Hackathon.

There were also exhibits of AI, robotics and startup innovations, and cutting-edge advancements in water management, textiles, smart agriculture, and circular economy. These exhibits will serve as a platform to discuss details and commitment for possible transfer of technologies and commercialization.

Moreover, with the aim to transform communities through active citizen-engagement, and to further promote the Smarter Philippines mission, the DOST Regional Office 2 is also set to secure its partnership with various government agencies, and academic institutions such as the Department of Human Settlement and Urban Development (DHSUD) Region 2, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), Isabela State University (ISU), King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) in Thailand and the Cauayan City LGU.

For the past two years, the iSCENE has become an opportunity to bring together government agencies, academe, industry players, and international partners for collaboration and knowledge-sharing to achieve smart, resilient, and sustainable communities.

Pumalag ang ilang netizen sa taas-singil ng Netflix simula Hunyo 1.

Sabi ng ilang netizen, dagdag-pasakit lang ito sa mga subscriber ng Netflix.

May iba pa umanong opsyon kung tutuusin sa halip na dagdag-buwis.

“Stop placing the burden of VAT on ordinary people. If you truly want solutions, start by exposing and eliminating the corruption within your own ranks.”

“Seeing this, I immediately canceled my subscription then Netflix would be seeing their user use dropping like flies”

“Para sa iba barya lang ‘yan. But realistically speaking, there are sooooooo many other options.”

Una rito, sa anunsyo ng Netflix simula Hunyo 1, dahil sa ipinataw na value-added tax (VAT) sa digital services sa Pilipinas ay magkakaroon ng adjustments sa kanilang singil.

Dahil d’yan, ang monthly rate ng Netflix ay magiging P169 na para sa mobile plan mula sa dating P149.

Ang basic plan naman ay papalo na sa P279 mula sa P249.

Magiging P449 naman ang singil per month para sa standard plan mula sa P399.

P619 naman ang babayaran para sa premium plan mula sa dating P549.

Unang e-Jeepney factory sa ‘Pinas, binuksan na

Isang pangarap ni dating gobernador Luis “Chavit” Singson ang natupad nang pinasinayaan noong Lunes ang kauna-unahang e-Jeepney assembly plant ng bansa sa Lima, Batangas, na nagbubukas ng bagong yugto sa sustainable at eco-friendly na transportasyon.

Sa loob ng malawak na planta, ipinahayag ni Singson ang kanyang adhikain: bigyan ng pagkakataon ang mga tsuper sa modernong panahon.

“Eksaktong kinopya namin ang iconic na disenyo ng jeepney dahil ito ang hiling ng mga tsuper at transport groups, Kinakailangan din ito ng gobyerno. Ngunit ngayon, ginagawa natin itong sustainable,” sabi ni Singson na matagal nang tagapagtaguyod ng kapakanan ng mga transport workers.

Ang bawat unit ay nagkakahalaga ng P1.2 milyon, kumpara sa P2.5-P3 milyong presyo sa merkado -- na kayang bawiin ng mga tsuper sa loob ng 2-3 taon.

Ayon kay Singson, kayang bawiin ng mga tsuper ang puhunan sa loob ng 2-3 taon at may buong suporta sa lokal na maintenance ang pasilidad na magpo-produce ng 500 unit bawat buwan.

“Kapag may nasira, maaayos natin dito,” giit ni Singson. “Target naming gumawa ng 500 unit bawat buwan, at dadami pa ito kung tataas ang demand.”

Lahat ay asembolado sa planta ng mga Pilipinong manggagawa. Dalawang oras lang at apat na trabahador para sa bawat unit, paliwanag niya.

Ang planta na magbibigay ng trabaho sa humigit-kumulang 80 na manggagawa at palalawakin pa sa Visayas at Mindanao.

Hindi ito pulitika, ayon kay Singson. “Ayoko mabahiran ng kulay kaya ako nag-withdraw. Gusto ko ng solusyon.”

Si Rep. Richelle Singson ng Ako Ilokano Ako Partylist ay nauna nang nangakong ipagpapatuloy ang adhikain: “Tinutuloy namin ang laban ni daddy.”

Ipinangako niya na pangungunahan ng Ako Ilokano Ako Partylist ang pagtulong sa mga tsuper at operator sa harap ng hamon ng PUV modernization program.

Gayunpaman, ang maliit na hadlang, ani ni Chavit, ay ang pag-apruba ng ruta ng e-jeepney.

Dagdag ng dating gobernador na hinihintay nila ang Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board na iproseso ang mga aplikasyon ng prangkisa para sa mga serbisyo sa transportasyon ng e-jeepney.

Habang naghihintay ng mga lokal na permit, sinabi niya na lumalaki ang internasyonal na interes. Ang Paraguay ay nag-order na ng 60 unit sa P2.5 milyon bawat isa — isang deal na inamin niyang makakatulong na mabawi ang kanyang gastos.

Samantala, matibay ang suporta ng mga transport group.Ipinagpasalamat ni Orlando Marquez, presidente ng Liga ng Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas, ang planta: “Si Manong Chavit, siya nakaisip na yumakap sa amin sa transportation, at lalo na sa LTFRB. Kami ay natutuwa dahil sa wakas naitayo na ang kauna-unahang assembly plant ng e-jeepney sa Pilipinas.”

Ayon kay Zaldy Pingay ng Stop and Go Transport Coalition: “Nagpapasalamat kami kay Gov. Chavit dahil magbibigay ng napakamura, zero downpayment at interest.”

“Pilipino kukunin nilang workers. ‘Yung magtatarabaho rito sa planta at service center. Maraming trabaho ang ibibigay. Malaking tulong sa ating ekonomiya. Hindi na mawawala ang mukha ng jeepney.”

Ang planta ay bunga ng partnership ng LCS Group at E-MON Co. ng Korea, na nagdisenyo ng 27-seater na e-jeepney na pinagsama ang modernong teknolohiya at klasikong disenyong Pilipino.

Nakatakda na rin ang pagpapalawak sa Visayas at Mindanao, na magdudulot ng malaking epekto sa ekonomiya ng bansa.
