OneDOST4U: DOST R02 to strengthen smart and sustainable initiatives in Cagayan Valley

Over the years, we have seen how essential the contribution of Science Technology and Innovation (STI) is in the development of our Country. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 02 has displayed firmly its accomplishments in STI, achieved excellence in the S&T ecosystem and echoed the spirit of Resilience in the entire Cagayan Valley.

The agency’s competency has shown in many aspects of government service. Moreover, the leadership and management of DOST R02 have formed the backbone of various improvements and strategies. This includes leadership in providing a unity of purpose, while also establishing the direction of the organization through its programs, projects and activities (PPAs).

Now, with our new battle cry, One DOST4U, DOST R02 will continue to advocate the utilization and transfer of available technologies from the research and development institutions down to the local government units, communities and industries.

DOST R02 will never stop from recognizing resilient MSMEs for continuously embracing the importance of unleashing creativity through Innovations and having the ability to respond rapidly and effectively in any circumstances.

Furthermore, DOST R02 with its mandate, will continue to provide central direction, leadership and coordination of scientific and technological efforts in building smarter cities and communities in the country.

This proved that DOST R02 is the leading STI hub in Cagayan Valley and Beyond. As we move forward to the next level of our S&T Landscape, DOST R02 will find and encounter even more enormous ideas that can help characterize the massive use of emerging technologies. 2 tropical cyclones, posibleng pumasok sa PAR – PAGASA

Dalawang tropical cyclones ang maaaring pumasok sa Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) sa susunod na mga araw, ayon sa PAGASA ngayong Huwebes.

Sa Laging Handa public briefing, sinabi ni PAGASA Administrator Undersecretary Vicente Malano na sa susunod na tatlong araw, wala silang na-forecast na tropical cyclone na papasok sa PAR.

Gayunman, dalawang tropical cyclones ang kanilang namataan na papasok sa bansa makalipas ang tatlong araw.

“Ayon po sa ating mga datos na nakikita sa ngayon, wala po tayong nakikitang mga sama ng panahon o bagyo sa susunod na tatlong araw. Mayroon tayong inaasahan, after three days... may mangyayari na inaasahan po natin na may bagyo, tropical cyclone na papasok sa ating Philippine Area of Responsibility,” pahayag ni Malano.

“Ang characteristics po nitong dalawang bagyo na nakikita po natin ay kamukha po ng nakaraang dalawang bagyo na pumasok dito sa Philippine Area of Responsibility itong si Caloy at Domeng na si Domeng papuntang Norte at ‘yung isa naman nanggaling sa West Philippine Sea at pumunta po siya ng China area,” dagdag ni Malano.

Ayon sa PAGASA, “Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will bring inclement weather over Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.”

Ang Metro Manila at ang natitirang bahagi ng bansa ay magiging bahagyang maulap hanggang sa maulap na papawirin na may isolated na mga pag-ulan o thunderstorms, ayon pa sa state weather bureau.

ASF vaccine, posibleng sa 2023 o 2024 pa — DOST

Maaaring mailabas ang bakuna laban sa African swine fever (ASF) na idinebelop ng isang local research company na hawak ng Department of Science and Technology (DOST) sa 2023 o 2024.

Sa Laging Handa briefing ngayong Miyerkules, sinabi ni DOST Undersecretary Rowena Guevara na ang vaccine para sa viral disease na nakaka-infect sa mga baboy at wild boars o baboy-ramo kadalasan ay dalawang taon bago ito madebelop.

Gayunman, gagawin munang i-develop ng veterinary research at diagnostic laboratory na BioAssets Corporation ang ASF test kits na posibleng mailabas naman sa pagtatapos ng taong ito o sa unang bahagi ng 2023.

“Meron rule ang Department of Agriculture [DA] na kapag may isang na-detect lang na baboy na may ASF, isang kilometro, lahat ng baboy do’n papatayin. Kapag 7 kilometers, may rules din sila. Kung magkakaro’n tayo ng detection kit, hindi na kailangan lahat patayin. Pwede mo nang i-detect kung sinong baboy lang ang may sakit at kailangan natin idispatsa,” sabi ni Guevara.

Ayon kay Guevara, ang BioAssets Corp. ay maglulunsad din ng isang mobile laboratory na ide-deploy sa Mindanao, na direktang pupunta sa mga lugar na may hinihinalang ASF cases upang agad na mai-test kung ang mga baboy ay talagang infected na ng nasabing sakit.

“Ang mobile laboratory unit na ito ay makakatulong sa mga veterinarians, sa mga farmers para magkaroon ng diagnostics doon sa point para makaresponde agad sa disease outbreak,” saad pa ni Guevara.

Noong nakaraang buwan, limang barangay sa Zamboanga City ang isinailalim ng mga awtoridad sa “red zone” dahil sa mga kumpirmadong kaso ng ASF sa kanilang mga baboy.

Matatandaan noong 2021, ayon sa DA ang Pilipinas ay nakipag-ugnayan na sa United States para magsagawa ng vaccine trials laban sa ASF. Gayundin, may pag-uusap na sa Pirbright Institute ng United Kingdom hinggil sa parehong usapin.
