West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has kicked off its 2025 “Plant for Life” program with an ambitious goal of planting 180,000 native trees across the Ipo and other critical watersheds this year. The initiative highlights Maynilad’s commitment to long-term water security, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.

The program began with a large-scale planting activity at the Ipo Watershed in Norzagaray, Bulacan, which plays a crucial role in protecting the Angat-Ipo water system—the main raw water source for Metro Manila. Volunteers from private sector partners, civil society groups, media organizations, and local communities joined Maynilad in the event, including representatives from the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) and sister companies within the MVP Group.

“Watershed reforestation is crucial to safeguarding the region’s water resources,” said Maynilad Chief Sustainability Officer Atty. Roel S. Espiritu. “Trees improve water infiltration, prevent soil erosion, and reduce sedimentation in dams, ultimately ensuring water quality and supply reliability for our 10.5 million customers. Just as important, this program helps restore local biodiversity and creates sustainable livelihood opportunities for nearby communities.”

Since its launch in 2007, Plant for Life has planted over 1.45 million trees across nearly 2,000 hectares, expanding beyond Ipo and La Mesa to include the Kaliwa watershed, mangrove belts along Manila Bay, and areas near Laguna Lake.

To ensure high survival rates, Maynilad engages Dumagat community members and local groups as forest stewards. These stakeholders handle nursery operations, monitoring, replanting, and forest protection under a structured three-year care program—providing both environmental and socio-economic benefits. As a result, the program sustains 80% survival rate while helping improve livelihoods.

Current reforested areas are estimated to sequester approximately 25,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually, contributing to climate mitigation and aligning with Maynilad’s broader sustainability and ESG goals.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is a concessionaire of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain portions), Quezon City (certain portions), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon, all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the municipalities of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.

As of Q1 2025, the West Zone concessionaire has brought down water losses to 36.2%, recovering 970 million liters of water per day since 2006. Date of release: July 31, 2025

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has reduced its non-revenue water (NRW) level to 36.2% as of Q1 2025, a significant improvement from 66.4% in 2006—the year the company was re-privatized.

This achievement translates to the recovery of 970 MLD—enough to meet the daily needs of millions of residents in the West Zone—through sustained investments and operational improvements over nearly two decades.

Maynilad inherited one of the oldest and most leak-prone pipeline systems from the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS). Its NRW reduction was achieved despite these challenging network conditions, requiring extensive technical interventions and capital expenditures.

Maynilad’s NRW Management Program includes the creation of District Metered Areas (DMAs), advanced network diagnostics, active leak detection and repair, massive pipe replacement projects, and strict meter management. As of Q1 2025, Maynilad has replaced 3,293 kilometers of aging pipelines and repaired over 18,000 pipe leaks in just the first quarter of the year.

“Reducing water losses in a highly complex and aged network like ours requires long-term investment and continuous innovation. This milestone underscores our commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and achieving our NRW targets,” said Maynilad Central NRW Head Engr. Ryan Jamora.

According to its IPO Prospectus, Maynilad aims to further reduce NRW to 25% by 2027 and 20% by 2030, maintaining this level until the end of the concession period.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire of Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) in the Philippines in terms of customer base. Its service area includes the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres and Sta. Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, EDSA, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the Districts of Holy Spirit and Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Malabon, all in Metro Manila; and the cities of Cavite, Bacoor, and Imus, and the municipalities of Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario, all in the province of Cavite.

Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has intensified its relief efforts for communities

inundated by persistent southwest monsoon (Habagat) rains, deploying water tankers,

mobile hygiene facilities, and distributing thousands of bottled water to evacuation

centers across the West Zone.

In coordination with local government units (LGUs), Maynilad has delivered over 8,120 bottles of drinking water to key areas including Quezon City, Manila, Makati, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Caloocan, Bacoor, Imus and Muntinlupa. The relief includes 5,310 bottles of 4-liter containers, 2,760 bottles of 350ml, and 50 bottles of 6-liter water, as well as sacks of rice and other essential supplies for affected families.

To ensure continuous access to safe water, water tankers have been dispatched to

several evacuation centers, with an additional 4,000 pieces of 4-liter bottles set for

distribution in the coming days. The company is also on standby to deploy mobile water

tankers to severely affected areas as needed.

To address sanitation needs, Maynilad is preparing to deploy its mobile shower facility

to select evacuation centers. At the same time, its technical teams are conducting

drainage de-clogging operations in flood-prone communities—complementing the

regular maintenance of its wastewater facilities and sewer networks to help minimize

overflows during heavy rains.

“Maynilad remains in close coordination with local and national government agencies to

ensure timely support to affected families. We are committed to help our customers

recover from this calamity,” said Maynilad Head of Corporate Affairs and

Communication Marie Antonette H. De Ocampo.
