West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) advanced its environmental sustainability goals through significant gains in water loss reduction and reforestation, delivering measurable benefits to both customers and ecosystems.

Under its “Mark the 39 Percent” Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Management Program, Maynilad reduced system losses to 38.4 percent in 2024, down from 43 percent the year before. The company completed 57,562 leak repairs, aided by AI-assisted monitoring tools and acoustic sensors that enabled early detection and predictive maintenance. It also implemented intensified enforcement efforts to curb commercial losses. These initiatives helped recover millions of liters of treated water daily, contributing to a more efficient and climate-resilient supply system.

Meanwhile, Maynilad continued to expand its Plant for Life reforestation initiative, which rehabilitates upland watersheds and coastal areas that are critical to Metro Manila’s raw water supply. Since the program’s launch in 2007, it has planted more than 1.4 million trees and mangroves across approximately 1,968 hectares. The program also supports local communities—such as the Dumagat indigenous group in the Ipo watershed—by integrating sustainable livelihood components in nursery work and site maintenance.

“Our progress in cutting water losses and planting over a million trees proves how ESG principles translate into real benefits for customers and communities,” said Maynilad Chief Sustainability Officer Atty. Roel S. Espiritu.

These results were recently recognized at the Inquirer ESG EDGE Impact Awards 2025, a new initiative honoring organizations with outstanding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance. Maynilad’s NRW program earned a Gold award in the Environmental category, while its Plant for Life program received a Silver award for Sustainable Ecosystems and Biodiversity Conservation.

Maynilad

Date of release: September 8, 2025

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. has signed a new agreement with Manila Electric Company’s (Meralco) local retail electricity supplier, MPower, to deliver power to its Poblacion Water Treatment Plant in Muntinlupa City and 54 other water and wastewater facilities. The partnership supports Maynilad’s ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency and transition to cleaner power sources.

Under the agreement, Poblacion WTP—Maynilad’s newest water treatment facility—has been enrolled in the Retail Electricity Supply (RES) program, where MPower will provide an energy mix of 90% non-renewable and 10% renewable power. MPower will also work with Maynilad to manage the plant’s energy use in preparation for a future increase in renewable share.

In addition, 54 Maynilad facilities—including pump stations, reservoirs, and wastewater treatment plants—are now part of MPower’s Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), which enables the bulk purchase of electricity and consolidation of accounts for greater operational efficiency.

“These initiatives form part of our broader strategy to optimize energy consumption while reducing our overall environmental footprint,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez.

In pursuit of carbon neutrality by 2037, Maynilad is implementing a comprehensive strategy centered on the transition to renewable energy sources and the establishment of a carbon sink equivalent to 180,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. As of March 2025, Maynilad aims to increase its reliance on clean energy to 15% of total power requirements, with a target range of 35% to 50% by 2037.

These efforts directly support the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which seeks to reduce the Philippines’ greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire of Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) in the Philippines in terms of customer base. Its service area includes the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres and Sta. Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, EDSA, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the Districts of Holy Spirit and Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Malabon, all in Metro Manila; and the cities of Cavite, Bacoor, and Imus, and the municipalities of Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario, all in the province of Cavite.

Maynilad personnel remove illegal connections during the company’s intensified crackdown on unauthorized water use. From January 2024 to August 2025, Maynilad regularized some 14,000 delinquent accounts—recovering lost water and improving supply for legitimate customers. Date of Release: September 5, 2025

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) continues its efforts to monitor and address illegal water connections, having regularized around 14,000 previously delinquent accounts between January 2024 and August 2025. These customers were reconnected to the system after settling their arrears and complying with account reinstatement requirements.

As part of this ongoing initiative, Maynilad dismantled unauthorized service lines, tampered meters, and illicitly reopened water connections. The recovered volume of previously lost water contributed to improved system management and helped stabilize pressure in affected areas.

“Water pilferage not only reduces supply pressure for paying customers, but also poses serious public health risks as illegal tapping may introduce contaminants into the distribution network,” said Maynilad Head of Customer Experience and Retail Operations, Engr. Rodolfo O. Baylas Jr. “We continue to conduct regular monitoring activities, with the support of local government units and law enforcement agencies.”

Maynilad emphasized that water theft is punishable under Republic Act No. 8041 (Water Crisis Act of 1995), with corresponding penalties including fines and imprisonment. The company urges the public to report suspected illegal connections via its official hotlines and digital platforms.
