Kung akala mo’y simpleng holiday lang ito na may masasarap na pagkain at makukulay na mga parada, aba r’yan ka nagkakamali, besh! Dahil sa totoo lang, ang Chinese New Year ay may malalim pang ugat sa ating kultura at kasaysayan.

Magmula sa mga tradisyon ng mga Filipino-Chinese hanggang sa makukulay na selebrasyon, ru’n mo malalaman kung bakit nga ba ito ipinagdiriwang. Kaya naman, sabay-sabay nating alamin kung paano ito naging isang espesyal na okasyon para sa mga Pilipino.

Ready na ba kayo? Let’s go mga Ka-BULGAR! Ang Chinese New Year ay isang pagdiriwang na puno ng tradisyon, suwerte at mga simbolo ng bagong simula! Knows n’yo ba na kilala rin ito rin bilang Spring Festival? Yes, ang Chinese New Year ay hindi lang simpleng holiday, dahil ito rin ang pagkakataon upang magpasalamat sa mga biyaya ng nakaraang taon at magtipun-tipon kasama ang pamilya.

Mula sa makukulay na lion dances, hanggang sa mga red envelopes na puno ng suwerte, ang Chinese New Year ay isang pasabog ng saya at pag-asa na kahit saan ka man sa mundo ay tiyak mararamdaman mo!

Gayunpaman, ang Chinese New Year ay hindi lang tungkol sa mga parades at fireworks, dahil isa rin itong selebrasyon ng masasarap na pagkain!

May mga tradisyunal na pagkaing inihahanda tuwing Chinese New Year na may espesyal na kahulugan para sa kasaganaan, suwerte at long life.

Narito ang ilan sa mga madalas ihanda, kaya naman, halina’t basahin natin ito!

1. DUMPLINGS. Isa ito sa pinaka-iconic na pagkain tuwing sasapit ang Chinese New Year. Ang dumplings ay may hugis na parang mga sinaunang barya, kaya’t itinuturing itong simbolo ng kasaganaan at kayamanan.

2. NOODLES. Ang mga noodles ay sumisimbolo ng mahabang buhay. Karaniwan, pinapahaba ang noodles at iniiwasang putulin, dahil ito umano ang magdadala ng suwerte sa buhay.

3. FISH. Ang pagkaing ito ang magdadala umano ng kasaganaan sa buong taon. Karaniwan, ang isda ay iniiwan nang buo, kasama ang ulo at buntot na sumisimbolo ng pagsisimula at pagtatapos ng taon na may kasaganaan.

4. RICE CAKE. Ang nian gao ay isang matamis na rice cake na gawa sa glutinous rice. Ito naman ay sumisimbolo sa pag-angat ng buhay, antas o ranggo. Karaniwan itong pine-prepare bilang dessert. Oh, ‘di ba pasabog?

5. SWEET ORANGES. Ito naman ay simbolo ng kaligayahan at kasaganaan. Karaniwan, ang mga prutas na ito ay ibinibigay bilang regalo sa mga bisita o kaibigan tuwing Chinese New Year.

6. SPRING ROLLS. Ang spring rolls ay para ding dumplings, subalit ang kahulugan ng pagkain na ito ay new beginnings o bagong oportunidad. Ang crispy, golden brown na itsura nito ay sumisimbolo rin ng kasaganaan.

7. TANGYUAN. Ang tangyuan ay matamis na rice balls na karaniwang may palaman at madalas din itong inihahanda sa huling araw ng Chinese New Year (sa Lantern Festival). Ito naman ay sumisimbolo ng pagkakaisa at good fortune.

8. LUMPIA. Isa pa sa mga paborito ng mga Pilipino tuwing Chinese New Year ay ang lumpia, hindi ba? Ito rin ay simbolo ng kasaganaan, dahil sa maliliit na piraso ng sahog nito na parang mga yaman.

Ang mga pagkaing ito ay hindi lamang para magbigay kasiyahan sa dila, dahil may malalim din itong kahulugan na nag-uugnay sa mga Tsino at Pilipino. Kaya kung magpaplano kang maghanda ngayong Chinese New Year, tiyak na marami kang pagpipilian.

Sensory-friendly screening of "Firefly" shines a light on inclusion... "Lights Up, Sounds Down" offers inclusive movie experience for autism community

In celebration of National Autism Consciousness Week, SM Cares, SM Cinema, Autism Society Philippines (ASP), and GMA Pictures partnered to host a successful sensory-friendly screening of the award-winning film "Firefly" on January 17, 2025. Over 2,000 participants across 10 SM malls, including children on the autism spectrum and their families, enjoyed a heartwarming and inclusive movie experience.

"Tuwing pumapasok kami sa mga SM malls, damang-dama namin acceptance, accomodation, and appreciation. It is the norm here," said Autism Society Philippines (ASP) Chair Emerita Dang Uy Koe.

Creating a welcoming space

The "Lights Up, Sounds Down" event went beyond entertainment. By adjusting lights and volume, creating a relaxed atmosphere, and allowing for movement and vocalizations, the screening catered to the specific needs of attendees on the autism spectrum. This empowered them to enjoy the movie at their own pace and comfort level.
